Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive from prospective clients. Every project begins with an initial conversation about your requirements, ideas and the way you use the space. We prefer to speak with prospective clients by telephone wherever possible, as this allows us to gather important information about the project, discuss budgets and timescales, and determine whether we're likely to be a good fit for one another.

If the project appears suitable, we'll arrange a consultation at your home. There is no strict limit on consultations or site visits during this stage, as we believe it is important to fully understand the space, your requirements and how the furniture will be used. Initial designs are typically developed as hand-drawn concept sketches, which help us explore layouts, proportions and storage solutions before preparing a fixed quotation.

Once we have sufficient information, we'll provide a comprehensive fixed quotation usually within 14 days. If you decide to proceed, a booking payment secures the commission and allows us to begin the full design development process before manufacture begins.
Initial designs are typically developed as hand-drawn concept sketches, allowing us to explore layouts, proportions and storage solutions before preparing a fixed quotation. These sketches help communicate our recommendations and ensure the proposed furniture is tailored to both the space and the way it will be used.

If clients would like additional reassurance before proceeding, we are always happy to discuss and review the concept drawings alongside the quotation. Once a commission is confirmed, the project moves into full design development, including scaled drawings, detailed working drawings, consultation and the refinement of materials, finishes and layouts. Manufacture only begins once the design has been fully agreed.
We design and manufacture a wide range of bespoke furniture, from fitted cabinetry and storage solutions through to freestanding pieces made to suit individual homes and lifestyles. Our work includes bespoke kitchens, fitted wardrobes, dressing rooms, home offices, media units, alcove cabinetry, bookcases, bathroom furniture, utility rooms, boot rooms and under-stairs storage.

In addition to fitted furniture, we also create freestanding pieces such as dining table and chairs, dresser cabinets, display furniture and other handcrafted items designed to complement the character of a home. Every commission is individually designed and made to suit the space, the client and the way it will be used.
We carefully select materials based on the intended use of the furniture, balancing durability, stability and appearance. For cabinet carcasses, we typically use premium board materials such as moisture-resistant MDF for painted interiors and real wood veneered boards, which can be stained and lacquered to achieve a wide range of finishes.

The visible furniture components, including frames, doors, mouldings, cornices and plinths, are always manufactured from hardwood timber. For painted furniture we commonly use American tulipwood due to its stability and excellent paint finish, while projects with a natural timber appearance can be produced in a variety of species, including European Oak and other decorative hardwoods selected by the client.

Finishes range from hand-painted cabinetry and colour-matched finishes through to stained and polished timber, allowing each commission to be tailored to the style of the property and the client's preferences.
Many of our clients come to us after struggling to find ready-made solutions that truly meets their needs. Off-the-shelf furniture is often available in limited sizes, colours and configurations, making it difficult to achieve the right fit, appearance or functionality for a particular room.

Bespoke furniture allows every aspect of the design to be tailored to the space, from dimensions and storage layouts through to materials, finishes and detailing. This not only makes better use of the available space, but also provides greater flexibility, higher quality materials and a more considered design than many mass-produced alternatives. The result is furniture that feels as though it belongs in the home rather than simply fitting into it.
Freestanding furniture is designed as an individual piece that can be moved, repositioned or taken with you if you move home. Examples include dining tables, dresser cabinets, sideboards, and display furniture.

Fitted furniture is permanently installed as part of the room itself. Rather than simply sitting against a wall, it is carefully scribed to the shape of the property and integrated into the architecture of the space. In many cases, existing skirting boards are removed from the installation area and reinstated onto the front of the furniture, allowing the finished piece to become part of the fabric of the home rather than simply being furniture placed within in it.

For period and character properties, we regularly incorporate existing architectural features into the design. This can include working around uneven walls, chimney breasts, sloping ceilings and exposed timber beams commonly found in cottages, farmhouses and converted barns. We can also reinstate original plaster coving and skirting boards, onto the furniture itself, creating a seamless built-in appearance that feels as though it has always been part of the property.
Absolutely. In fact, many of our commissions begin because a client has been unable to find a ready-made solution that works within the constraints of their home.

Bespoke furniture can be designed to work around architectural features such as chimney breasts, alcoves, sloping ceilings, uneven walls and exposed timber beams. We regularly create fitted furniture for cottages, farmhouses, converted barns and period properties where standard-sized furniture simply isn't practical.

By designing specifically for the space available, awkward areas can often become some of the most useful storage within a home. Alcoves, sloping ceilings, under-stairs spaces and irregular room layouts can all be transformed into practical, well-organised storage that would otherwise be difficult to utilise effectively.
Lead times vary from project to project and depend on several factors, including the size and complexity of the commission, the level of design development required and our current workshop commitments. Unlike mass-produced furniture, every piece we create is individually designed and manufactured to suit the client and their home.

The consultation and design stage is often influenced by the pace at which decisions are made. We encourage clients to take the time they need to consider layouts, materials and finishes, as we believe good design should not be rushed.

Once the design has been agreed and is ready for manufacture, we can provide a clearer indication of when the project will enter the workhshop schedule. This depends on the commissions already in progress, where they are within the manufacturing process and whether the new commission can be integrated alongside existing work or requires a dedicated production slot of its own.

We will always discuss timescales openly and provide realist guidance based on our current workload and the nature of the project.

Yes. We provide a complete service from design and manufacture through to installation, and every project is personally installed by the same team that built it. This ensures the furniture is fitted exactly as intended and allows us to maintain the level of quality and attention to detail that bespoke work demands.

Many projects also require preparatory works before installation can take place. Through our network of trusted specialists, we can help coordinate electrical, plumbing, decorating and other supporting trades where required.
​
Following installation, we also work with trusted decorators and specialist hand painters where needed to complete the finished appearance of the room. This collaborative approach helps ensure the furniture integrates seamlessly into the home and the finished project is completed to the highest possible standard.
Taylor Furniture Ltd is based in Derbyshire and undertakes commissions throughout Derbyshire, and the surrounding counties. Many of our projects are concentrated within the Peak District and neighbouring areas, although we are always happy to discuss projects further afield depending on the scope of works involved.

Once the design has been agreed and is ready for manufacture, we will confirm how the project fits within our production schedule and keep you informed as it progresses.
